Dr. Jon Hamilton Meyerle started Sylvan Dermatology along the Main Line, Pennsylvania, upon retiring from the U.S. Army after over 20 years of service. As he approached the end of his military career, he considered positions in academic medicine and the Veterans Affairs. Ultimately, he decided to enter private practice as it allowed him to do what he does best, take care of people.
After graduating from Princeton University through an Army R.O.T.C scholarship, Dr. Meyerle attended Yale University School of Medicine. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine and a residency in Dermatology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center, now the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He pursued additional post-doctoral fellowship training in Immunobiology at Yale and Immunodermatology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He returned to Walter Reed and served as Physician Staff, Chief of Immunodermatology, and Chief of Dermatology. During that time, he deployed overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Unified Response, and Operation Enduring Freedom. He spent eight years at the Uniformed Services University rising to the rank of Associate Professor and was the Director of the Dermatology Residency Training Program at Walter Reed. Along the way, he earned the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Services Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal and was recognized with the A Proficiency Designator, Clinical Investigation and Research Regulatory Oversight Designator, and Master Clinician Award. He’s served in various levels of leadership to include as Troop Medical Clinic Officer in Charge, Camp Edwards, South Korea; Command Surgeon, Camp Arifjan, Kuwait; Brigade Surgeon, 7th Sustainment Brigade, Haiti; and Battalion Surgeon, 3-4 Infantry Battalion, Afghanistan. He rose to the rank of Colonel and retired in June, 2019.
Dr. Meyerle held academic appointments at the Uniformed Services University, Yale University School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He was inducted into Sigma Xi research honor society, the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology. He has published over 40 peer reviewed publications, textbooks, presented at numerous academic meetings, and is an active reviewer for prestigious academic journals.
His over 20 years of active service inculcated in him the military ethos to “leave no-one behind.” This philosophy embodies the traits of loyalty, integrity, determination, and commitment. It is a culture that he brings to his practice and is the value that he holds most dear.
